Here at WWT we are committed to reducing our use of plastic packaging for our mailing of products here is what we are doing.
- We reuse existing outer or void fill packaging where possible to keep the materials (resource) in use for longer before recycling it and to keep costs down for WWT, a charity.
- Where we have to buy new packaging, we only buy plastic free, made from 100% or very high percentages of recycled materials (encouraging recycling) and it is all fully recyclable (although depending on condition, you can also reuse it to keep the resources in use for longer).
- We take steps to minimise packaging volumes, use the right size package for the product to minimise postal volumes and void space packaging.
- We will always combine your orders in a single package where we can to minimise delivery costs and environmental impacts.
- The packaging peanuts that we occasionally use to protect contents are made from maize and are fully compostable in commercial facilities (meeting BS EN 13432 standards) so can be put in food waste containers where you have them or you can reuse them to pack your own parcels.
- The same goes for any compostable packaging on our other products – the packaging is certified to either BS EN 13432 (will break down in set times in commercial compostable facilities such as where the council sends food waste) or OK Home Vincotte (the packaging will break down in set times in home compost bins).
- BEWARE any packaging that describes itself as biodegradable. It does not mean much without meeting the aforementioned standards which show that a product has been tested to break down in set timescales into harmless products. While all compostable materials are biodegradable, not all biodegradable materials are compostable.
- Please remember, the delivery and product packaging is the smallest (though of course an important!) part of a product’s impact. The product itself will have the biggest environmental impact. Protecting the contents from damage is therefore essential to reduce the environmental impacts of the product to save it getting damaged and protect it and the resources that have gone into making it.
- Where we can, we are removing all non-essential product packaging e.g. from our new greetings card range.
